BEACH EDUCATION AT FOXTON

Thanks to all our amazing parents who have offered to come with us on Wednesday to the Surf Lifesaving Club at Foxton Beach to learn all about how to STAY SAFE at the beach. Remember we will be leaving promptly at 8.30 so everyone needs to be at school and organised with all their gear by 8.15. This week we have been thinking about what makes us unique and what makes Room H special. We have learned that one of Stella's ancestors was a Maori Chief, that Ben is related to Sam from TV One's Breakfast show and that Seth can move his fingers into incredible positions!!!

Rippa Rugby World Cup

DUE TO BAD WEATHER, THE TOURNAMENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL THURSDAY 11.00 a.m.

The senoir team have been learning to put on a major event for our Inquiry using the Rugby World Cup as an example. We have decided to put on our own major event, a Rippa Rugby World Cup. The details are:
Where: Manchester Street School field on Tuesday 4th October (Postponement Thursday 6th October)
Happening: Opening ceremony 11am Curtain raiser: Manchester Midgets 11.10am Kick off 11.20am
Semi finals Finals will be held at 11.50am Prize giving 12.15pm.

This week is BOOK WEEK. Every day everyone in the school will be silently reading for 10 minutes starting at 11.00 am. Room H and Room I had a surprise visitor after lunch on Monday when Mrs Monteith came in to read 2 books to us. It was lovely to see her again and hear about her trip to England and what she is getting up to during her retirement. We have been involved with the Winter Warmers Programme run by the Feilding Public Library. We have almost finished our booklets and we are really proud of them. We did a page with our Room F buddies. They chose their favourite book which we read to them and then we both decided on a page to illustrate.

Everyone is buzzing with their stories about the snow that has fallen in Feilding over the past two nights. Here is the Senior Adventure Playground when we arrived at school on Monday morning. We have been writing Haiku poems about snow which we will share with you soon.

RED NOSE DAY

MSS is joining in the Red Nose Day celebrations. We will be painting our noses red on Friday and enjoying our delicious Subway. We also took some photos in "red nose poses" and are learning the Red Nose Day song "You make the whole world smile with your little button nose".

Today the Senior Team had a fun time at their CELEBRATION with lots of different Speed Stacking competitions. It was hard to concentrate with the pressure of being watched and cheered on by lots of supportive team-mates. Well done to all those who made the finals. Here is the MIGHTY MATAI team giving it their best shot in the team relay competition, coming a well-deserved second. Keep practising - more competitions next term.

FAREWELL MRS MONTEITH

Yesterday all of the MSS children said goodbye in their own way to Mrs Monteith at a special assembly. The Senior Team sang some waiata and read some of their writing; the Middle Team sang a special song to the tune of "We Will Rock You" and gave her a HUGE card and the Junior Team sang her a special song as well. On behalf of the Enviro and Green Teams, Nelly and John presented Mrs Monteith with two planted pots. We will miss you, Mrs Monteith!

It is wonderful to listen to such articulate students who are able to verbalise and show what they have learned and the goals that will help them improve or move to the next level. THE RUGBY WORLD CUP

When we heard that the Rugby World Cup was going to be on display in Feilding we quickly changed our plans and headed to the Square to see it. Some comments heard were: "It's quite small"; "I can see feathers and leaves on it"; "It's very shiny bright gold"; "New Zealand is only on there once". We had to be very careful not to touch it or bump it. The man from the Rugby Union wore white gloves to move it. The only people actually allowed to touch it are the winning team at the end of the final. Let's hope it's the ALL BLACKS!

FOOD SAFETY

We have been learning how to keep the food in our lunch boxes safe to eat. We need to use 3 of the 4 "C"s to help us remember what to do:
CLEAN - Wash fruit/veges; wash our lunch boxes and containers/drink bottle; have a clean bench and utensils when we are preparing our lunch; wash our hands
COVER - use airtight containers; separate food groups; use reusable or ziplock bags
CHILL - freeze drink bottles; use a freezer block; keep our lunch box in the fridge before we leave for school; use an insulated lunch box; keep our lunch box out of the sun.

"ON 'YER BIKE"

We have begun our safe cycling unit. Here are our learning intentions and success criteria:
We are learning to keep ourselves and others safe as bicycle riders.

Success Criteria: I

demonstrate safe cycling skills
use road rules and signal correctly
have the correct equipment and a well-maintained bike
can complete a riding challenge

Room H students will need to have their bike and a correctly fitted helmet at school on the following days:
Monday 7th March; Tuesday 8th March and Wednesday 9th March. We will be working directly with Constable Diana Hayden. If students wish to they may leave their bikes at school for the 3 days - they will be locked in the classroom overnight. Students may ride their bikes to and from school each day if that is appropriate. If your child does not have a bike please do your best to borrow one for these days. If your family has a spare bike that you would not mind lending to another student, please see me.
The Bike-Out challenge to Timona Park will be on Wednesday 16th March. This involves our whole team. We need as many parents as possible to accompany us on bikes. We will also require 1 or 2 cars to carry gear. The route is carefully planned and monitored by the Feilding Police. Students will take part in different activities at Timona Park - this is a whole day out. A separate notice will be sent home later this week.

FONTERRA SCIENCE ROADSHOW

The Senior Team has organised a visit to the Science Roadshow on Monday 14th March at North Street School. There will be exhibits, demonstrations and lots of hands-on activities. CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE

We are all watching with horror as events unfold in Christchurch. As a school we want to show our support for everyone who is suffering because of the devastation caused by the latest earthquake.

On Friday this week we will hold a MUFTI DAY. Students and teachers will wear red and black to show our support and pay $2.00 minimum as a donation towards the Mayoral fund. The children in each class are also designing a page for a commemoration book which they will all sign and it will be sent with our donation.We hope everyone will support this. I also hope that all your friends and family are safe in Christchurch during this time.

SENIOR SCHOOL CAMP

In Term 4 the whole Senior Team is off to camp. We are going to Forest Lakes Camp in Otaki from the 2nd to the 4th of November. There are lots of exciting things to challenge us there e.g. water and mud slide, horse riding, abseiling, kayaking, an amazing flying fox, 10 pin bowling and a confidence course to name just a few. The Year 5's in the Senior Team got to learn some great athletic skills on Thursday in the very hot sunshine - some they got better at and some were completely new e.g. the hammer throw. What great athletes we will have next year!

Grace's Guniea pigs

On Thursday the 23 of September Grace brought her guniea pigs to visit Room H. One was golden brown and named Toffee and the other was white with a few dark brown patches and she was named Snowball. They are both girls. I really enjoyed cuddling Snowball because she is really fluffy, and I really enjoyed Toffee because she didn't try to run away like Snowball! Grace told us that she had to clean out their
outdoor hutch every second day and that they don't like too much lettuce.This is a picture of Grace holding Snowball.

I was very impressed with the standard of speeches this year - there was a wide variety of topics as you can see from the video clips. Congratulations to Bailey C and Haize who went on to respresent our class in the Team speech finals this week. Haize was the runner-up and will give his speech, along with Ainslee from Room I in the Lions Oratory Contest next term. Speech asssessment forms and self-reflections are included in pupils' portfolios which will be sent home at the end of the year.

NYMPHS - Garland Making

We got a head garland each and then used some shells onto it. Next we spread some feathers out on our head garlands. Then ued a cold glue gun to stick our shells and feathers on. After that we got some coloured ribbon and tied it to the back.

Making a shark mask

First we cut out the shape, then we glued it on cardboard. Next we cut it out of the card and painted it. We folded it and stapled it together. Then we made a fluffy piece to put on the inside of the mask.

Costume Making Day

On Thursday the 19th of August we created our shark heads for our production called Tagaroa's Gift. We had to cut out the head piece and stick cardboard under it with PVA glue. Then we had to paint our sharks grey, black and white. It was hard to get the paint to dry quickly. Then we folded the head and put a head rester in it. It looked awesome in the end.

WARRIORS.

On that same Thursday the warriors of Tangaroa made their wristbands, headbands and our puipuis. First we made our wristbands out of stretchy material and sewed some patterns into the material with wool. Then we did the same with the headbands except they had a blue around the outside - my headband was white. With the puipuis some parents ripped up some materials that we had to staple onto some ripper rugby bands.

Making the Seaweed Costume

One part for the seaweed costume involved plaiting. We had to chose three wool colours and tie them together. I think plaiting is hard because I'm a boy and I've never done it before. You have to go right into the middle and then left in the middle and so on. We stapled the plaited wool onto a green band to go on our hats.

Tangaroa's Gift

Tangaroa's Gift is about a sea creature named Paua.
She is very sad because everyone teases her because she is very ugly and has no friend's. Tangaroa, the god of the sea, gives Paua a beautiful new shell that Paua loves.
But all the other sea creature's became jealous of Paua's new shell and tear it to pieces. Paua became sad again.
Along came Tangaroa and this time he made it strong and the sea creatures could not tear it apart but now Paua could not hide from them.
This time Tangaroa covered it inside a cover of drabness taken from the rocks
and now Paua was now very happy and could still hide in among the rocks.
Tangaroa's Gift will be in week 8 and is held at the Civic Centre.

On Tuesday I went to the auditions for a talking part in the production.
I tried out out for Tangaroa.
When I went up in front of all the senior team teachers which made me really nervous.
A couple of days later when I read that I was Tangaroa I was sooooo excited.
As soon as I got my script I started practicing because I wanted to make sure that I would be perfect.
It is really tiring having to practice every day but I am getting the hang of it now.
I just can't wait till the production.

Alphabet Soup

If you liked the soup we made on Enviro Action Day here's a recipe for it so you can make it at home:

4 cups of hot water
1 tsp sugar
4 tsp vegetable stock powder
1 pkt of alphabet soup mix
1 small onion
1 stick of celery
1 small potato
1 tbsp chopped parsley
Put the hot water in a medium sized saucepan over high heat. Add the stock powder and the sugar. When this mixture comes to the boil add the noodles. Prepare and add the vegetables in the given order. Chop the onion and celery. Grate the carrot and scrubbed potato. The soup should be cooked about 10 mins after the noodles are added. Stir in the chopped parsley and serve, or cool and reheat later.

LIFE EDUCATION TRUST CARAVAN

GERONIMO STILTON VISITS.

On the twenty first of May Geronimo Stilton came to school because of the Book Fair. Geronimo Stilton couldn't speak so Mrs Bennitt had to speak for him. We had to have a quiz on him bescause some people didn't know much about him. We went with Room F. We answered some questions about his books and his life. Everyone got to get a Geronimo Stilton stamp and the people who answered the most questions got to have a picture with him. I like Geronimo Stilton because he is funny and he is a talking mouse. Celebrating Easter

At easter I'm going to have easter eggs. And our family are going to church this Sunday for the easter service. The kids will be doing a song and a poem. The church will be singing songs. And the pastor will say his bit. Next we will go to morning tea. The kids will have a bisicut each and a drink. The adults will have a coffee and a peice of cake. Then we go back down and sing songs. And after songs us kids go to Sunday School. And do fun activities. What are you doing for easter?

Earth hour is tomorrow but our school did it today because we won't all be here tomorrow so remember to turn your lights off tomorrow at 8:30 to 9:30.It felt different working in the dark. At home it will be freaky in pitch black. I hope it will be fine at home. Manchester Street School
does this because we are an enviro school also because we like saving power becaue it helps the whole world.

Relay For Life

Last Friday was PURPLE PEOPLE EATERS DAY at school. We dressed in purple to support the teachers who will be walking in the Relay For Life 24 hour walk on 13th and 14th of March. We raised over $300 which was a great effort and is going to the Manawatu Cancer Society. It was fun to be out of our uniforms for one day to support this worthy cause.

BUDDY TIME & BUTTERFLIES

Last Friday we went with our buddy class to Kowhai Park to see the Monarch Butterfly hatching area. It was amazing to see all the cocoons in different stages - some caterpillars were just starting to spin, some were in a full cocoon and some were hatching. There were lots of butterflies flying everywhere. If you are at the park don't forget to have a look - we found it fascinating. Even though it was a very hot afternoon we had a wonderful time and even had a short play in the playground and looked at the birds in the avairy.

MSS is going to celebrate learning on Friday 30th November at 12.15 along with all other schools in NZ. Miss Groombridge is going to teach us a dance to the song "Hands Up" and we will all join in with "Hands Up For Learning". Listen to the song and get ready to practise your moves!

FABRIC FUN DAY

HIWI THE KIWI GOES FISHING

On the 4th of August we all joined together as a school to listen to what advice the minstrel had to give about fishing and how much fun it can be. He told us how to keep safe and what fish to take or
leave in the water. He shared some fun ways to fish safely by singing songs and doing actions that we all joined in. He called out some funny sayings like ‘okey dokey’ and we had to reply ‘hokey pokey.’ It was a fun and active morning and we all enjoyed it.

Gymnastics

These are photos of the 4 activities we had to complete on the beam. The first photo shows mounting the beam; the second dismounting; the third balancing on toes and lastly balancing while crouching.

In the last four weeks the senior team learned some Gymnastic skills. The equipment we used was: the bar, the beam, the mat, and the volt. Before we started Gymnastics Ms Ellis introduced us to Brain Gym. Some of the senior team could do most of the Brain Gym activities but most of us needed help.

How To Make a Fish Kite

Room H made some colourful Japanese fish kites. This is how to do it:
First we had to design a fish on a piece of paper. We folded lunch paper in half and copied the fish onto both sides. Then we painted the fish with bright colours. After the paint dried we went over the lines in black marker pen. Next we had to cut the fish on the folded line and glue the two sides together leaving a gap at the mouth and the tail.We made a pipe cleaner into a circle and stuck it into the mouth opening. We tied string to the pipe cleaner.

TREES

TREES

When I think of trees, I think of giants, standing tall and proud. A warrior, a giant branch, his sword gleaming as he prepares for battle.

When I stare at trees I think of mountains -a sharp branch being the peak of the giant hill, like Mount Everest.

When I think of trees I think of the leaves, swirling and whispering secrets to the great plants.

When I gaze up at trees I imagine great soldiers, never moving and swaying with the wind.

When I stare at trees at night all I see is a great, pitch black shadow looming over the yard and casting a ghostly shadow around my room like a crypt.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

The production of Joseph was a huge success and we managed to make a profit of 10,000 dollars! Our school got 5,000 dollars and we are going to put it towards a new digital piano and other musical items and instruments. Our favourite songs were Any Dream Will Do, Go Go Go Joseph, Song of the King and Those Canaan Days!

We would like to thank Alannah Twigge, Alecia Viles, Pat Snoxell, Frank Dew, Sara Palmer, Glenn Raka, Richard Scott, Jenna Baxter, Allan Williams, stage crew, props and everyone else that was in this production. Us kids really appreciate it and were honoured to be in a production like that!

MR WHEELER'S MEDAL

On Friday, July 31st, Manchester Street School held an assembly for Mr Wheeler because he became a Commander of St John’s.
First the juniors performed two songs about him; one song had the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus”. The middles performed a haka, the same one the All Blacks do and also three girls gave a speech about their time at St John’s. After that the house leaders & three year 6 girls said a poem about Mr Wheeler and the seniors sang a waiata, “Manchester E”. When they had finished, Mr Wheeler told us what happened when he went to Auckland and he showed us his medal and cape and put them on.

Kiwi Golf

Thirty M.S.S senior students participated in the programme ‘Kiwi Golf’. We did lots of different golfing activities like long shots, chip shots and putting. There were two sessions at M.S.S and one at Feilding Golf Course.
We both liked putting because it was really fun when we had the competition at the end. We had to stand between two cones about a metre away from a path and whoever putted their ball onto the path was out and the two people who were the farthest away from the curb were out also. When there are three people left the person who putts closest to the curb wins the game. Even though we didn’t win any games it was still our favourite part.

Room H & Room F Visit the UENUKU WALKWAY

As part of Buddy Time we armed ourselves with rubbish bags and plastic gloves and walked through the Uenuku Walkway with the aim of cleaning it up. We didn't find a lot of rubbish there which was great and we cleaned up the Alpha Bus Depot as well which was much appreciated by the bus drivers! They asked if we could come back and wash the buses as well.
